So, you may have heard already… yesterday, the world lost an ICONIC musician, artist and human. Prince.
You are probably wondering why I’m writing about this. It’s about why we are
photographers artists. We are creatives… our sole purpose of why we are in business is to preserve a moment, a memory. It’s art really. Just like Prince, he created music to express himself. That was his art.
So what can we learn from Prince? A lot.
1 Don’t stop. He showed us that his music would not be denied. Remember that one time his record label stopped him from releasing more music? He changed his name to the “symbol” and released more music. BOOM! Don’t stop, don’t give up!
2 Believe in Yourself. Prince had extravagant outfits that were bold and different. He did not conform to society’s standards, he stayed true to himself. Believe in what you do.
3 Be daring. His music and the way he reinvented himself, allowed him to push the boundaries, to be BOLD. We have to continue to be daring, to put ourselves out there.
4 Party Like It’s 1999 – celebrate in everything you do. As solo-preneurs, we have to remember that we get to do what we love. Even with the lows, I am still grateful that I get to call the shots and work with amazing young people.
And lastly, one of my favorite quotes of his…
“Despite everything, no one can dictate who you are to other people.”
There are people out there that probably won’t ever hire you, people who may not like your work. Heck, they may not even like you. But at the end of the day, there ARE people who love you and what you do. They will see your passion and dedication to being an artist, a creative and most importantly, your true self.
Now over to you, leave a comment below with what your favorite Prince song was, and how it taught you something!
Have a great weekend!
