Tell us about yourself and your business.
My passion for photography started whenI was a kid, posing and photographing my Barbies. Decades later, I love helping teen girls see the beauty that is inside of them. One of my favorite parts of taking Senior portraits is helping Seniors design their sessions so that their personality is captured. I always love trying new things… using new lighting techniques… new locations.
What is in your gear bag?
I am a Canon girl, although I am not a major gear head. I shoot with dual 6D bodies. My favorite lens is probably my 70-200mm 2.8, but I also love to whip out my 17-40mm wide angle lens to capture cool environmental portraits. I also have a fondness of off-camera flash. I am currently loving my Godox 360II with a socked beauty dish for my OCF work.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from the most random places. I have almost become obnoxious as I watch movies and analyze the lighting of different scenes.
What is one obstacle you had when you first started your business? What did you do to overcome it?
My biggest obstacle when starting was consistency. I always love to challenge myself. That sometimes is in the form of different editing styles and sometimes it is learning different lighting. There was so much talk about finding your own style and such that I felt like it was limiting me from trying new things. I have since learned that style isn’t necessarily linked to a particular editing style.
Please share one tip that you found to be successful to share with other photographers.
If I had a tip for someone just starting off, it would be to study business! Read business books! I can kind of be a kill joy when I have a teen tell me that they want to go off and get a degree in photography. I am learning that taking beautiful pictures is only one small aspect of being a successful photographer.
