Tell us about yourself and your business.
My name is Traci. I am married to a pretty handsome fella and have three beautiful girls. We live in Oklahoma, but am originally from Colorado. I have completely embraced the Okie way of life and love living in our small town.
I have been shooting professionally for eighteen months now. I have fallen in love with shooting seniors because they are are excited about life and their future. I love getting to know each of them and learning about their dreams after senior year. It is truly an honor to capture this time for them and their families.
What is in your gear bag?
I shot with a Canon 5D Markiii with the Canon 85mm 1.8 lens.
Tell us about this session.
This session was a dream session. Being new to the senior market, I don’t include hair in makeup in my packages yet. However, Kim had her makeup professionally done and WOW! It made such a difference in the pictures and post processing.
We started our session a few hours before sunset and the lighting was gorgeous. We began in the gardens of a local museum and ended with a more urban look of downtown Tulsa.
Where do you draw inspiration from? My inspiration comes from my family and other photographers. My family challenge and encourage me to step out of my comfort zone and try new things. I follow some pretty amazing photographers and their work is truly inspiring. There are a few fellow photogs who have graciously mentored me along the way and not only is their work stunning, but the way they run their business inspire me in my photography journey. I hope to be able to give back and also inspire other photographers one day.
What is one obstacle you had when you first started your business? What did you do to overcome it? I struggled with finding MY style when I began my business. I would see photos from amazing photographers and try to mimic that style because I loved the way it looked. I thought that if I did the same thing, my photos would be beautiful too. That method became exhausting because I loved so many styles and was constantly changing my work flow. I wanted to find MY style and I began by looking through my pictures and choosing my absolute favorites. When I put them all together, I looked at each one to see what I loved about it. I slowly began to incorporate those elements that I loved into my workflow. Finding my style has drastically reduced my editing time and given me more confidence as a photographer. It has also allowed my clients to know exactly what they are getting because when they look at my work, the style is consistent. We all have our own style.. it may just take some time to discover <3.
Please share one tip that you found to be successful to share with other photographers.
Reach out to people. The photography world can seem competitive. If you are inspired by someone or several photographers, reach out to them. Ask questions and soak up their knowledge. There is so much to learn in this business. I have several photographers who I admire and they have been amazing and so gracious with mentoring me. I recently had someone ask me for advice and to follow me on a shoot. First, I was so excited and honored. Second, I said ABSOLUTELY. I want to give back because so many have contributed to my success so far. So thankful for the friendships I’ve made through this journey and look forward to so many more. <3
