I opened Rachel Coney Photography in 2013 and started shooting children and families. Over time I realized I enjoy having more control of a shoot than children allow, so late 2015 I made the choice to start specializing in senior portraiture. While I still love my family sessions, I love the creativity I can bring to senior sessions and the enthusiasm my seniors have is so refreshing!
|What is in your gear bag?
Canon 6d camera, Sigma 35 Art, Canon 50 mm 1.4, and Canon 85 mm 1.8
|Where do you draw inspiration from?
I love taking cues from current fashion. Colors are a huge influence in my sessions and I’m a huge lover of evening light and back lighting.
|What is one obstacle you had when you first started your business? What did you do to overcome it?
I wanted to learn all the things as quickly as possible. I was trying all kinds of new things that I didn’t have the skill for and my work was all over the place. Once I started focusing on creating a cohesive editing style, I started producing images that were consistent and became proud of my work.
|Please share one tip that you found to be successful to share with other photographers.
I think it’s incredibly important to listen to your clients. It’s so easy to get caught up in your own artistic vision, it’s still important to make sure your clients are in on your ideas and make sure they are excited about your direction. If they’re not loving it, it will show!
