Tell us about yourself and your business.
Hello! My name is Colleen Sanders and I’m a wife and a mommy and love our family like crazy! I am also a high school math teacher as well as a photographer. I started specializing in senior portraits about two years ago because high schoolers are my passion! I love working with my senior model team and all my seniors!
What is in your gear bag?
Canon 5d iii, 85 mm 1.2 L (which stays on my camera 99% of the time!), Reflector.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
I love looking at clothing websites like H&M and also magazines – anything from People magazine to Style. I am exciting to add some editorial style imagery to my work this year, so I love watching the angles and poses from modern magazines.
What is one obstacle you had when you first started your business? What did you do to overcome it?
The biggest obstacle I’ve faced in my business is the feeling of not being good enough and comparing my work to other photographers. It got me feeling down. When truly my work is my work and my clients loved it! I made a huge change last year and tried to not pay so much attention to what others were doing, and focused on what I wanted to do. Galicia has a great saying – I had fomo – Fear of Missing Out. So I was trying to keep up with current trends and watching what others were doing, instead of getting out of my own head and doing what I wanted to do. Creating the vision for my business and going the direction I wanted to go! There is so much freedom in finding your own way!
Please share one tip that you found to be successful to share with other photographers.
Pouring into my senior models both with my time and energy has been so rewarding for me. I love getting to know them and becoming a mentor to them. My senior girls love having another adult is it cheering them on and excited for all their successes!
