Tell us about yourself and your business.
I am a senior photographer based out of the Twin Cities. I have been in business for 7 years. My business is geared towards uplifting teens and providing an amazing, fashion forward experience.
This annual Valentine’s Day shoot is always a favorite with my senior models. I ask each girl to write down one insecurity and one positive thing about themselves onto a paper heart. I also assign each girl a name and ask them to write something uplifting about that person and share the heart with them. I photograph (and take video) of them sharing their hearts. After they share their hearts, they rip up their insecurity. They hang their positive things on the wall so we can all see them. I always love photographing this theme because they girls really open up to each other. I always love the reaction the girls have when they read the uplifting note from their fellow senior model.
What is in your gear bag?
Canon 5D Mark iii, Canon 70-200 2.8L ii, Sigma Art 50mm 1.4, Canon 24-70 2.8L ii, Canon 84 1.2L
Where do you draw inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from my clients. I love getting to know them personally, and I draw off of them for inspiration.
What is one obstacle you had when you first started your business? What did you do to overcome it?
I feel as creatives we put so much pressure on ourselves for our work to be “good enough”. After reading a book about creative inspiration I have learned to let go and know that creativity will hit you when you let go of the pressure to be “good enough”.
Please share one tip that you found to be successful to share with other photographers.
Raise your prices! Seriously. I have found that photographers are not charging what they are worth. They are treading water just trying to stay afloat. Find a great workshop and invest in your business!
