Tell us about yourself and your business.
After a little wandering of the south east and the world, I moved back to my home town to start my business full time in 2012. And being the size town that it is, I jump at a chance to shoot when I’m out of town. I make bi-annual trips down to the Atlanta area to help my best friend with her dance teams, and this year was blessed with this short session, of a dancer I’ve been shooting for 7 years.
What is in your gear bag?
My new Nikon D750 (before that it was a D600), last year’s upgrade to the Nikon 70-200mm and this year’s upgrade to the 24-70mm. And of course my trust 50 and 85. I use a reflector when I have the patience, but to be honest I’m not consistent with it. And very very rarely, if ever, pull out flash.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
Places I’ve never been, clothing I love, and true, honest, joyful people, excited to be in front of the camera and explore with me.
What is one obstacle you had when you first started your business? What did you do to overcome it?
Finding clients. And honestly it’s still an obstacle. Convincing people that photography for their senior is well worth the $800 they just dropped on a prom dress, is a tough business. So I joined a group to help keep up the moral and support of working with a group of high schoolers, to try and keep my name in front of the up coming classes. Knowing other people in the same line of work, with the same trials, is more comforting than anything.
Please share one tip that you found to be successful to share with other photographers.
Keep going. It’s worth it to shoot the sessions that inspire you. No matter how much I love babies, it isn’t my calling. Do what you love, don’t settle for just any paycheck, and you will excel in your specialty.
