|Tell us about yourself and your business.
I am a senior photographer from Avon, Indiana. I gradually started my business from a hobby to a business out of my house, and have now had a store front studio for the last 2 years. I have been shooting since 2011. I have a passion for art in many forms. I am a former dancer and love to photograph dancers as well.
|What is in your gear bag?
I am a Canon girl! I use a 5DMKii. My go-to portrait lens is the 100mm 2.8 Macro. I also keep my 24-70mm available for wider shots. I never leave without a basic white/silver reflector as well. I usually shoot in natural light, but sometimes bring an Alien Bee with me if the session calls for it. This particular session was all shot in natural light.
|Where do you draw inspiration from?
I usually draw inspiration from the senior themselves. I always do a pre-session consultation where we talk about their favorite things, their favorite music, favorite stores, and what type of session they want. Also the location and season tend to inspire certain poses, or fashion choices.
|What is one obstacle you had when you first started your business? What did you do to overcome it?
My biggest obstacle was really my own confidence to take the leap and do this! I just gradually started branching out, shooting different types of clients and really finding my niche in senior portraits. I really love photographing seniors and find them really fun and exciting. The more I shot, the more comfortable I became and gradually built my confidence.
|Please share one tip that you found to be successful to share with other photographers.
One tip that I think is really important is to meet with your clients, both the senior and their parents prior to their session. Don’t just rely on phone calls. There is so much important information to share such as what to wear, how to prepare, what to bring, what things cost etc. I find that the most successful sessions, with the happiest customers are the ones where the family took the time to listen, share ideas, and collaborate. Make seniors feel special. This is a big milestone in life that they are commemorating.
