Tell us about yourself and your business.
I’ve been in business full time for a little over 4 years. I graduated with a BS in photography and a Masters in Education and taught art full time for 12 years. It wasn’t until I pursed a photography business full time that I was able to “find my voice” as an artist and really learn how to operate a one woman show.
What is in your gear bag?
Canon MarkIII 5D
85mm, 50 mm, 35mm, 70-200
Where do you draw inspiration from?
My inspiration always come from my clients, the vision they may have for their sessions, the things their parents are hoping for. I work closely with them before each session to really discuss the “feel” they are after. I try to keep things light and fun during the session to help them relax and really enjoy their session time.
Going into this session, we had talked previously about wanting to capture an everyday look, a more natural classic look, and then something with a very high fashion feel. All the prep ahead of time was so helpful in having obtainable objectives ahead of time!!!
What is one obstacle you had when you first started your business? What did you do to overcome it?
Saying ‘no’ or just standing by policies that needed to be put into place. I think the general public doesn’t understand some of the things we do and why we do them. I’ve found that great communication and being transparent from the start with my clients really helps them never be “on the defense” and once trust is established, they are able to ask questions if they have any.
Please share one tip that you found to be successful to share with other photographers.
Explain things ahead of time, share as much information as you can in order from keeping any surprises for client or for yourself.
