Tell us about yourself and your business.
I am a homeschooling mom of 4 and I’ve had my part-time photography business since 2012. I fell in love with photography years before that when my husband bought me my first DSLR camera and I honed my skills by constantly photographing my own kids. Due to all of that practice capturing moving targets, I have specialized in families and children, including seniors. There’s nothing better in this business than bringing joy to a family through beautiful pictures of their children.
What is in your gear bag?
I shoot with a Nikon D750 and a Sigma Art 50mm 1.4 almost 100% of the time. I also use the Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 if needed in a tight space.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
Nature really inspires me and so I use that as my backdrop 90% of the time. Golden hour makes me giddy.
What is one obstacle you had when you first started your business? What did you do to overcome it?
Comparison was probably the biggest obstacle as a new photographer. We so often get down on ourselves if we’re not just like or as good as so-and-so. But what I have learned this year, after 4 years in business, is that I am ME and my clients like me for me and my creative eye, and to embrace that. Now (most of the time) I can learn from others without feeling the need to be just like them.
Please share one tip that you found to be successful to share with other photographers.
Be yourself, not anyone else. Learn to study other’s work for inspiration and honing your skills only, not letting yourself get into the comparison trap, recognizing that they are them and you are you. Rather than comparing yourself, develop your own unique style and own that!
